Color theory for digital design

A digital color palette is a coordinated set of colors used consistently throughout a product. Good palettes include a primary brand color, tints (lighter variants mixed with white) and shades (darker variants mixed with black), neutral grays, and semantic colors for success, warning, and error states.

Complementary colors sit opposite each other on the color wheel (e.g. blue and orange) and create high contrast. Analogous colors are adjacent on the wheel (e.g. blue, blue-green, green) and create harmony. Triadic colors are evenly spaced 120° apart and produce vibrant, balanced combinations.

The 60-30-10 rule is a practical guide: use your dominant color for 60% of the design, a secondary color for 30%, and an accent for 10%. This creates visual hierarchy without overwhelming the viewer.

Frequently asked questions
What is a tint vs a shade?
A tint is a color mixed with white (lighter), while a shade is a color mixed with black (darker). Both are useful for creating consistent design systems.
